The press has a table-sided tool (3) and a die-sided tool, and either has an associated piston plate (14). This carries the tool, and extends across the tool surface. The piston plate is movably connected to press table (2) respectively press die. The rear side (15) of the plate away from the tool defines a pressure compensation chamber (16), which is filled with hydraulic medium. The other side of the chamber is defined by a counter surface (17) on press table respectively press die. The chamber height is larger than a maximum deflection occurring on table/die when the press is under load.
